The Orinoco Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum altum) is widely considered the most majestic and largest species of angelfish in the aquarium hobby. Native to the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia, this species is admired for its extremely tall body, elegant fins, and bold vertical striping.
Often referred to as the “King of Angelfish,” Altum Angelfish have a dramatic appearance that immediately distinguishes them from the more common angelfish species. Their tall triangular body, extended fins, and graceful swimming movement make them a spectacular centerpiece fish for large freshwater aquariums.
Wild Orinoco Altums are especially prized among serious aquarists due to their natural beauty and impressive size.
In the wild, Orinoco Altum Angelfish inhabit slow-moving blackwater tributaries and flooded forest areas of the Orinoco River system. These waters are typically warm, soft, and acidic with large amounts of tannins released from decaying leaves and wood.
Typical habitat conditions include:
Warm tropical temperatures
Soft, acidic blackwater
Dense submerged roots and branches
Low mineral content
Calm or slow-moving water
These conditions create the ideal environment for Altum Angelfish to thrive.
Altum Angelfish are easily recognized by several distinctive features:
• Extremely tall body profile
• Long dorsal and anal fins
• Bold vertical black stripes across the body
• Distinct notch or dip above the forehead
• Silver body coloration with subtle bronze highlights
This species can reach impressive dimensions compared to other angelfish.
Average Adult Size
Length: up to 6–7 inches (15–18 cm)
Height: up to 12 inches (30 cm) including fins
Their height and elegance make them one of the most impressive freshwater aquarium fish available.
Despite belonging to the cichlid family, Altum Angelfish are generally peaceful and calm fish when kept in appropriate conditions. They are social and often do best when kept in small groups in large aquariums.
Suitable tank mates may include:
Peaceful tetras
Corydoras catfish
Peaceful dwarf cichlids
Other calm community fish
However, small shrimp or tiny fish may be seen as food.
Altum Angelfish require large aquariums with significant vertical height due to their tall body structure.
A suitable aquarium should include:
• Tall tanks with plenty of swimming space
• Driftwood and natural decorations
• Dense aquatic plants
• Gentle water movement
• Dim lighting or tannin-stained water
Replicating a blackwater environment using botanicals such as Indian almond leaves or driftwood can help them feel more comfortable.
Altum Angelfish are omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods.
Recommended foods include:
• High-quality pellets
• Frozen bloodworms
• Brine shrimp
• Daphnia
• Occasional live foods
A varied diet helps maintain their health, growth, and coloration.
Temperature: 80 – 86°F (27 – 30°C)
pH: 5.0 – 6.8
KH: 0 – 3 dKH
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons or larger
Stable water conditions are very important for this species.
Wild Altum Angelfish originate from the Orinoco River Basin in northern South America, particularly in Venezuela and Colombia. Many specimens in the aquarium trade are wild-caught, though captive-bred populations are becoming more available.
Add elegance and prestige to your aquarium with the Orinoco Altum Angelfish, one of the most iconic and admired freshwater angelfish species in the world.
