Also known as Fire Tetra, Dwarf Red Tetra, or Amanda’s Tetra
The Ember Tetra is a brilliant nano species that glows with a bright ember-orange hue across its semi-transparent body. Its peaceful nature, very small size, and lively schooling behavior make it a favorite for community aquariums—especially planted and nano tanks where its coloration stands out beautifully against green plants and dark substrate. Increasingly popular in the hobby, this species is both hardy and elegant, making it an excellent choice for aquarists of all levels.
Ember Tetras are peaceful shoalers that thrive in groups of 6 or more. They generally inhabit the top and middle levels of the aquarium but will also feed in the lower levels.
Due to their tiny size, they are best suited to peaceful, small tank mates, such as microrasboras, pygmy corydoras, and shrimp-friendly species. Adult dwarf shrimp are typically safe companions, though shrimp fry may be consumed. Avoid large or overly active fish that may outcompete them during feeding.
Although adaptable as tank-bred specimens, Ember Tetras thrive in aquariums that mimic their native slightly acidic, tannin-rich waters of Brazil’s Araguaia system. They display their best health and color in planted tanks with dark substrate, clean water, and floating plants that diffuse the light.
Diet should be varied and protein-rich to maintain vibrant coloration:
High-quality flakes and micro pellets
Frozen or freeze-dried Artemia, daphnia, tubifex, and finely chopped bloodworms
Live foods such as microworms or baby brine shrimp for conditioning and breeding
Striking ember-orange coloration despite its tiny size
Peaceful disposition, ideal for nano and planted aquariums
Active schooling behavior adds energy and motion
Hardy, tank-bred species suitable for beginners and experts alike
